Guide to Bildarchiv der Kunst und Architektur

This is wonderful site that can eat up hours, days of time as you browse it. Most of the images are black and white, but it makes up for it by the variety and depth of the collection. It is in German, see the search guide for assistance.

For help with the German terms, go to Free Translation.com for free translations from German to English.

Click on this link to open Bildindex in a new window Bildarchiv der Kunst und Architektur

Search Guide: Each of the searches below uses a file tree for navigation, although you can enter text to search for in the box. As long as there is a plus sign in the folder, you have more to look at, keep clicking until it has a – sign or its blank.

Kunstler- Search by artist name, for all museums and locations.

Orte – Gives you the ability to search by geographical location of the art, this has over 1.4 million images to chose from. For instance, if I wanted to look at the collection of the Germanisches National Museum, I would click on N, scroll down until I came to Nurnberg. Then I would chose Sammlungen (Collections) . Under this you would click on Germanisches Nationalmuseum. Under this you have the different categories of their collection.

  • Malerei (Paintings) , underneath this you have Künstler (by Artist) and anonyme Werke (Anonymous work)
  • Kunstgewerbe (Arts and Crafts) , under this you have a large selection of items, including Tracht und Kleidung, inkl. Zubehör (dress and clothing, including. Accessories) under that you have
    • Frauenkleidung ( Women’s clothing)
    • Männerkleidung (Men’s clothing)
    • Kinderkleidung (Children’s clothing)
    • Hüte und Hauben (Hat’s and Hoods)
    • Schuhe (Shoes)
    • Taschen (Purses and Pouches)
    • Fächer (Fans)
    • Kämme (Combs)
    • Varia (Various)

Its such a gold mine for photos of actual items from the period. They have couple of really interesting hats, shoes and pouches.

At the top of each results page is a string that tells you the path that you took to get there. Here are a few that I really like.
